Politically Motivated Violence

Political violence is violence that is used to achieve political goals. It can include violence which is used by the country towards another country, otherwise known as war. Another form of political violence is where the country uses violence against civilians and non-state actors and vice-versa.

There are significant reports on unlawful killings, forced disappearance, torture and inhuman treatmeant on behalf of the government and other non-state actors (groups of people that are not directly connected with the government, but can significantly control the government). There has also been unlawful civilian deaths, forced disappearances or kidnappings, torture and physical abuse, and unlawful recruitment or use of child soldiers by terrorists and groups in rebellion against the government. Terrorist groups continue to attack the government and citizens resulting in many deaths
 

Restrictions on freedom of expression:

  • Threats of violence

  • Violence

  • Harassment of human rights organizations


Commission on Human Rights (CHR), responsible for investigating human rights violations, investigated 111 new complaints in August of 2022. They were all alleged extrajudicial or politically motivated killings
 

Drug wars:

The Philippine drug war also known as the War on Drugs, is the anti-drug campaign of the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte. 

  • July 1, 2016 to September 30, 2020: Officially, members of the Philippine National Police and Drug Enforcement killed 5903 people during their anti-drug operations

  • The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights actually estimated the death count as 8663 people

  • Other domestic human rights organizations also including the government’s commission for human rights, believe the real number is triple that of the number the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights reported
