Gangs, Crime and Terrorism

There are numerous gangs in the Philippines, but most notably the Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Terrorism is also a major threat within the Philippines, with ISIS - East Asia, being the most dangerous. Even though most of the terrorist groups in the Philippines are no longer active, they are still known for their past crimes.

Sigue Sigue Sputnik

  • The gangs of the Philippines are more centered in the slum areas

  • One of the largest gangs are the Sigue Sigue Sputnik

    • Influence reaches even the capital of Philippines, Manila

    • The Sigue Sigue Sputnik gang became one of the most largest and involved gangs in the Philippines during the drug wars of the Philippines

      • January 4, 2017: A gang member (Randy Lizardo) shot and killed a policeman (Enrico Domingo), the policeman along with other police officers were conducting a buy-bust operation in the gang members house

Terrorism

  • The Philippines military force and the Department of National Defence work collaboratively for anti-terrorism

  • There are domestic security measures in areas of the Philippines where it’s deemed high risk for terrorist or insurgent activity

  • The military, law enforcement, and judicial authorities of the Philippines participated in the US’s programs and used the training and equipment they received to counter terrorism incidents

    • ISIS-East Asia is the deadliest terrorist threat in the Philippines

    • They attack the military of Philippines, police, government, and Christian civilians using: IEDs, suicide operatives, VBIEDs, and small firearms

    • They recruit, fundraise, and attack on civilians and security forces around the Philippines

      • 2021 - Terrorist Attacks with IED’s and small firearms

        • June of 2021: 2 buses were bombed and torched killing 4 people

        • Authorities arrested the maker of the bomb, Ali Akbar, one of the bomb makers for ISIS. ISIS flag was found in possession

      • September of 2021: Explosion at a volleyball court, in Datu Piang, Maguindanao, 8 people wounded

        • Many victims were a part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community
